The bass is such a vital and unique instrument used in practically all bands.
If you listen to lots of bands without a bass (minus techno stuff), your missing out! :)

The cool thing about bass, is that it is much easier to learn on than guitar.Almost anyone can learn bass, and scrape by as a beginner in a band. But this can be a misconception. Bass players are VERY talented, just as bad ass as a lead guitarist. In fact, they even occasionally DO play lead solos. These are REALLY rad, because most people have the bass player farther in the back.
The main focus of rock, is to make rules and break them, so the more musical rules you break the much more fascinating your music can become. Having the bass players get there fair share of fun and fame is a plus for everyone.
